Why AI Cannot Replace Specialist Neurodivergent Travel Support
Artificial intelligence has changed how many people plan their holidays. Within seconds, an AI tool can suggest destinations, create an itinerary or list popular attractions.
I use AI myself, and I believe it can be a helpful starting point. But finding places to visit is only one small part of planning a holiday, especially when someone has sensory needs, anxiety, food concerns or difficulty coping with unexpected changes.
For many neurodivergent travellers and families, successful travel is not about fitting as many attractions as possible into each day. It is about feeling safe, prepared and understood.
That is where specialist human support makes a difference.
Lived experience cannot be downloaded
AI works by finding patterns in the information it has been trained on and the sources it can access. It can describe sensory overload, but it has never experienced it. It does not know what it feels like when a supposedly small change makes the rest of the day impossible.
A chatbot might suggest a hotel described online as “quiet.” What it may not identify is the busy road outside, the evening entertainment downstairs or the railway line nearby. It will not automatically know which of these things would be a problem for you unless you know exactly what to ask.
I have ADHD and dyslexia, and I am the mum of an autistic son. I understand from lived experience that accessibility means far more than step-free access or an adapted bathroom.
It can mean:
Having somewhere quiet to decompress
Understanding the layout before arriving
Knowing what sounds, crowds or lighting to expect
Building recovery time into the holiday
Having an alternative plan when something changes
Every neurodivergent person is different. My role is not to assume what you need, but to listen and help you work out what would make travel feel manageable for you.
Safe food needs more than a restaurant list
For some neurodivergent people, familiar food is an important source of comfort and regulation. A sudden change in texture, brand, presentation or routine can affect much more than one meal.
AI can produce a list of highly rated restaurants, but popularity does not tell us whether a venue is suitable for a particular person. An online menu may also be outdated, and a restaurant described as family-friendly may still be noisy, crowded or unpredictable.
When food is a concern, I can research menus, locations and nearby alternatives. Where appropriate, I can also contact accommodation providers or venues to ask questions.
No travel adviser can guarantee exactly how a kitchen will prepare every meal, but careful research can reduce uncertainty and help families make more informed choices.
Support when plans change
Travel does not always go according to plan. Flights can be delayed, platforms can change and transfers can be missed.
For someone who relies on predictability, an unexpected change can be particularly difficult to manage. At that moment, being given another list of links is not always what they need.
Some specialist AI travel systems are becoming more capable, but an ordinary chatbot usually cannot access your booking, speak to the provider or understand how the disruption is affecting you personally.
Clients using my Full Travel Concierge service receive support while they are away. If a problem occurs, I can help them understand their options, contact the relevant provider where possible and work through the next steps.
I cannot prevent every disruption or guarantee every outcome. What I can do is help ensure that you are not left trying to manage it entirely alone.
You should not need the perfect words
AI often works best when the user gives it detailed and precise instructions. But if you are already overwhelmed, you may not know what to ask, or even how to explain what is making travel feel difficult.
That is not a failure on your part.
When you work with me, you do not need to arrive with everything organised. We can slow the process down, unpack your concerns and identify what matters most.
Communication can also be adapted where possible. If speaking on the telephone is difficult, we can discuss alternatives such as written communication or WhatsApp.
The aim is to work at a pace that feels manageable, rather than expecting you to fit into a rigid process.
Understanding your financial protection
AI can help you research a holiday, but it is not your travel agent and does not provide financial protection.
If you use AI suggestions to make separate bookings, the protection you receive will depend on each provider’s terms, how you paid and your travel insurance. Booking separate parts of a trip is not necessarily the same as booking a protected package.
When you book through Nero Divergent Travel, I will explain what financial protection applies to your particular arrangements. This can vary depending on the holiday, supplier and way the trip is booked. Any relevant protection documents will be provided as part of the booking process.
AI is a tool, not a replacement for human understanding
This is not an argument against using AI. It can be useful for gathering initial ideas, comparing locations and helping you think about questions you might want to ask.
But AI does not know you. AI does not get it right all the time.
It cannot replace a conversation with someone who listens, notices the details and understands that a holiday that looks perfect online may not feel right in reality.
That is the difference specialist neurodivergent travel support can make.
